Step 1: Import your car from England (UK) to Spain

Before you can register it, you must bring your car from the UK to Spain. To do this, you will need to file the import tax with the Tax Agency and pay the corresponding fee. Additionally, you must request a temporary circulation permit to drive your vehicle until the final registration in Spain.

Step 2: Homologate the car

To register an imported car, you must first homologate it. This process is done at the ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) and involves checking that the car complies with Spanish safety and environmental regulations.

You will need to present the necessary documentation, such as the certificate of conformity, the technical specifications sheet, and the circulation permit. It is important that the car has the same elements as Spanish cars, such as lights, signaling, and license plates.

Step 3: Register the car

Once you have homologated the car, you can register it in Spain. To do this, you must submit the car’s documentation and the taxes and proof of payment of the same, as well as the fees, a copy of your ID or NIE, and the certificate of registration, at the Traffic Headquarters.

The process of registering a car from England in Spain requires a series of essential documents.

First, you need the original documentation of the vehicle, including the technical inspection sheet (ITV for the vehicle), the purchase invoice, and the circulation permit from the country of origin. Additionally, it is crucial to have a European certificate of conformity, which certifies that the car complies with the safety and environmental regulations of the European Union. This document must be issued by the manufacturer or an authorized body.

Furthermore, to register a car from England in Spain, you also need a residence or work permit in Spanish territory, as well as your ID or NIE.

If the buyer is a company, the CIF and documentation accrediting the legal representation of the company will be required.

In addition, the corresponding registration fee must be paid, and proof of payment of the relevant taxes must be presented.

Once all these documents are gathered, you can proceed with the registration of the car in Spain and obtain the corresponding Spanish license plate.

Knowing exactly how much it costs to register an English car in Spain is complicated, as it will vary depending on the car model and year of manufacture. In general, the main costs of registering an English car are:

  • Import tax: This tax varies according to the type of car and its value. You can check it on the Tax Agency’s website.
  • Technical inspection fee: This fee is paid at the ITV and can be around 100 euros.
  • Registration fee: This fee is paid at the Traffic Headquarters and can be around 100 euros.
  • Municipal circulation tax: This tax is paid annually and can vary depending on the locality and the characteristics of the car.
  • Registration tax: This is based on the car’s CO2 emissions.

If you want to know the cost of registering your English car in Spain, write to us and we will provide you with a personalized quote.

As a vehicle from outside the European Union, it is necessary to clear customs and pay the corresponding duties and VAT when importing it.

In this case, the VAT to be paid would be 21% of the car’s value + 10% duties (depending on the case) and the customs clearance management fee, which costs €250 + VAT.

In some cases, it can only be done if it is a change of residence for the current owner, especially for vehicles manufactured before 2015-2025

Since it is an imported vehicle, to register it in Spain, you will need not only the foreign registration certificate (also known as TEIL I and TEIL II) but also the Spanish technical sheet, which you will obtain by passing the vehicle technical inspection at an ITV station.

At the ITV station, you will need to indicate that the vehicle is imported and present the invoice or sales contract (if you bought it from an individual). You will also need the European certificate of conformity (COC) and, in some cases, individual homologation.

If you do not have any of these documents, you can also obtain the vehicle’s reduced technical sheet issued by an industrial engineer (if you need help with this step, consult us).

Once you have everything, you will need to pay a fee of €95.80 (indicative amount, it may vary by province), and once the inspection is completed, you will be given your new Spanish technical sheet.

This value is calculated based on the fiscal horsepower of the car (box P.2.1). As a guideline, the price will vary depending on the type of car. For passenger cars and mixed-use vehicles with up to 9 seats, including the driver, it would be as follows:

  1. Less than 8 fiscal horsepower: €25.24
  2. From 8 to 11.99 fiscal horsepower: €68.16
  3. From 12 to 15.99 fiscal horsepower: €143.88
  4. From 16 to 19.99 fiscal horsepower: €179.22
  5. 20 or more fiscal horsepower: €224.00

The Transfer Tax (Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales or ITP) is paid only if you acquire the vehicle abroad and purchase it from a private individual. You will need to pay 5-8% of the vehicle’s value, a value determined by the government in their annual valuation lists.

The Registration Tax (IEDMT) varies based on CO2 emissions and is filed with model 576 of the Tax Agency. For new cars, the regulations have changed.

If you have purchased the car abroad, this value will differ and the old regulations, which are also based on CO2 emissions and the car’s value (as indicated on the invoice), will apply. However, if your car does not exceed 120g of CO2 (box V7 of the technical sheet), you will be exempt from the registration tax:

  1. 0%: emissions up to 120g/km
  2. 4.75%: emissions between 120g/km and up to 160g/km
  3. 9.75%: emissions over 160g/km and under 200g/km
  4. 14.75%: emissions over 200g/km

Additionally, for UK (England) license plates, it is also possible to request an exemption from the registration tax, provided you submit the consular deregistration for relocation to Spain due to the current owner’s change of residence.

The current updated value is €99.77. You can obtain it on the Directorate General of Traffic’s website.

Yes, it is also the most recommended option during the entire process.

The green plates are valid for up to 60 days, which is more than enough time to legalize your vehicle while you have it inspected at an ITV and avoid potential penalties for violating Spanish traffic regulations.

NOTE: Since the vehicle has a different direction of travel than ours, it is very likely that the ITV will require you to change the headlights or modify the direction of the lights. Consult your workshop for more information.
